Prebuilt vs. Custom Built: What You're Actually Paying For

Let's clear something up right at the top: a prebuilt PC is not a scam. I've been building machines since 2004, and I'll be the first to tell you that the big-box prebuilts you see online and on store shelves have gotten a lot better over the years. Some of them are genuinely fine machines.
But "fine" and "a good deal" are two different things. When you buy a prebuilt, you're paying for more than the parts. You're paying for assembly, marketing, warranty overhead, retail markup, and a company's profit margin—all rolled into one number that you can't break apart. The trouble is that the number on the price tag has to come from somewhere, and it usually comes out of the parts you can't see.
So let's break this down. Here's where the money tends to go, and where the corners tend to get cut.
First, let's be fair to prebuilts!
If you need a computer tomorrow and you don't want to think about it, a prebuilt does the job. It shows up in a box, it turns on, and it plays your games. For a lot of people, that's enough, and there's no shame in it. There are also legitimately good boutique builders out there who do honest work. I'm not talking about them. I'm talking about the mass-market machines in the $800 to $1,800 range that most folks are actually comparing against when they're shopping—the ones where a flashy graphics card is doing all the talking on the product page. That flashy graphics card is the trick. It's the one part everyone knows to look for, so it's the one part they make sure looks good. Everything around it is where they save.
Where Does The Money Go?
The Power Supply
This is the big one, and it's the part almost nobody checks. The power supply feeds clean, stable electricity to every other component in the machine. A cheap one runs hot, wears out fast, and in a bad case can take other parts down with it when it fails. Prebuilts love to skimp here because you can't see a power supply on a spec sheet the way you can see a graphics card. You'll get an unbranded unit with a wattage number and nothing else—no external efficiency rating, no real warranty, no reputation. I won't put a no-name power supply in a machine I hand to a customer, because I'm the one who has to answer the phone when it dies.
The RAM
Two things get quietly cut with memory in prebuilts. First, the speed—slower RAM is cheaper, and most buyers don't know to ask. Second, and this one actually matters more, is whether it's running in dual channel. Without getting too far into the weeds: modern PCs are designed to use two sticks of RAM working together, which roughly doubles how fast the system can move data around. A lot of budget prebuilts ship with a single stick to save a few dollars, which leaves real performance sitting on the table. You paid for the graphics card, but you're feeding it with one hand tied behind its back.
The Storage
You'll often see a big storage number advertised—"1TB!"—without any mention of how fast that drive actually is. There's a real difference between a modern solid-state drive and a slow, bargain-bin one, and it's the difference between your PC feeling snappy and it feeling like it's wading through mud every time it loads something. Fast storage is one of the most noticeable upgrades a person can feel day to day, and it's one of the first things to get downgraded when a builder is chasing a price point.
The Cooling
Stock coolers are built to keep a part from catching fire, not to keep it running its best. When a prebuilt cuts costs on cooling, the machine gets loud, it runs hot, and the parts inside quietly throttle themselves down to avoid overheating. You're leaving performance you paid for on the table, and you're shortening the life of the parts while you're at it.
Irreplaceable Parts
This is the one that stings later. A lot of the big prebuilt brands use proprietary parts—custom motherboards, oddly shaped cases, power supplies with non-standard connectors. It keeps their costs down, but it means that two years from now when you want to drop in a new graphics card or more storage, you find out you can't, because nothing standard fits. A machine you can't upgrade isn't a machine you own so much as one you rent until it's obsolete.
What "parts at cost plus flat labor" actually means:
Here's how I do it at Ryan's Rigs, and why I do it this way. When you buy a build from me, you pay exactly what the parts cost. Not a marked-up bundle price—the actual receipts. Then you pay one flat labor fee for me to build it, test it, and get it into your hands running right. That's it. Two numbers, and you can see both of them. The reason that matters is transparency. When the parts and the labor are separated out, you can see exactly where every dollar went. There's no room to hide a cheap power supply inside a big round number, because there's no big round number. If I put a quality unit in your machine, you see the quality unit on the invoice, and you see what it cost me.
That's the whole idea. I'd rather you understand what you're buying than be impressed by it.
The stuff that doesn't show up on a spec sheet:
Say something goes wrong three weeks after you get your machine. With a big prebuilt, that's a support ticket, a hold queue, maybe a shipping label to send the whole thing back across the country and wait. With a local build, that's a phone call to the person who built it. I'm veteran-owned and I work right here in Lancaster and Berks County. My 90-day labor warranty means if something I did isn't right, I make it right—and you're talking to me, not a script. There's also the part that's genuinely hard to put a price on: the machine gets built for how you actually use it. A build for somebody editing video looks different from a build for somebody playing competitive shooters, which looks different from a build for a kid getting into Minecraft and a little bit of everything. A box on a shelf is built for an imaginary average person. Yours gets built for you.
So which should you actually choose?
I'll be straight with you, because that's kind of the whole point of Ryan's Rigs. If you need a machine right now, you don't care about upgrading it later, and you just want something that turns on and works—a prebuilt is a reasonable choice, and I'm not going to talk you out of it. But if you want to know exactly what's in your machine, get real quality in the parts that matter instead of just the one everybody looks at, keep the ability to upgrade down the road, and have an actual person to call when you need one—that's what a custom build is for. And more often than not, when you line the parts up spec for spec, you'll find the honest custom build lands right around the same price as the prebuilt anyway. You're just getting the version without the corners cut.
